I haven’t yet done a full comparison with Headspace, but at first glance, I’d say that it is a richer mindfulness meditation experience. The app features a series of mindfulness instruction courses developed with a variety of meditation experts, such as Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg, George Mumford and others. I will report further after I have had a chance to experience this app in greater detail.

Dan Harris also wrote a book about his experience discovering mindfulness meditation after experiencing a stress and drug related panic attack on national television. I am reading the book, also called 10% Happier, and will report on that separately. So far, I am enjoying it.

I wish more people understood the importance of turning towards their anxiety. As a therapist, I have become increasingly impressed with Focusing as a way to listen to what your own body has to say. A client of mine had been suffering with severe anxiety most of his life and the only relief he found was through Xanax. When I showed him how to focus and listen to his body, it was the first time he began to feel relief without medication.

Focusing was developed Dr. Eugene Gendlin (see his great book Focusing, which is an easy read) and further developed the Focusing Institute http://www.focusing.org/. Another great source on Focusing is Ann Weiser Cornell PhD, (see FocusingResource.com). Her book The Power of Focusing is also a great introduction to Focusing.
